around here

So while things have been getting demolished to smithereens in our farmhouse this last week,

our family has moved into the guest cottage.

It had a little facelift of its own during December and January so we started with a blank slate.

My goals for the space since we are living here for three months while our house is being renovated are:

1) Make it as homey and cozy as possible.

2) Make the most of the 1000-ish square feet…without it feeling “cluttered.”

3) Do so by using things we already have without it looking like a big ol hodgepodge.

I pulled things from our house and basement and went to town…

See that weathervane in the corner? I forgot to show it to you when I bought it last year. It’s a favorite for sure.

It’s from a Wisconsin Dairy Farm from the early 1900’s.

When I saw the name James…I knew it was coming home with me. (My hubby’s name is James. It’s my dad’s and brother’s name too).

As for the bare windows…

I’ve ordered these woven wood shades. I think the tones will play nicely with the wood floors and bring some warmth and texture to the space.

But they won’t arrive for another three weeks.

Many of you have left comments and emailed about the plans for our house.

That post is coming soon…:)

Looks so good! And I just love it when Riley gets in a few pictures. You’ve made it nice and cozy yet open and breezy.

Wouldn’t it be funny if, after the farmhouse is done, you find you actually LIKED living in 1000 sq. ft.? That’s about what we raised our kids in, and now we have about double that, which I love, but sometimes I wonder why we need more now that there are less of us? ( except holidays!) Good luck with the reno, I know it will be amazing!

Marianne…funny enough, I’ve had those same thoughts already! My husband and I both have said if we didn’t still have kids at home, we’d be happy as clams out here! 🙂

I’ve been stalking to see what was next for the 1000 square feet! Wow….it looks so amazing. I have been thinking that our family needs to downsize…..we live in a quad level home and I often question if we really need all that we have…. I realize you are renovating, but I am anxious to hear how it goes for you…….. Share more!!!! It’s so fun seeing all this!

    • Maple & Magnolia February 26, 2014 at 9:29 pm #

Thanks so much, Andrea. I totally agree…we spend most of our time in just a few rooms…living in a small space has taught me that small is actually very cozy and MUCH easier to keep clean! 🙂

Ummm…that pine shelf/armoire made my heart start beating rapidly. It is fabulous!

    • Maple & Magnolia February 26, 2014 at 9:30 pm #

Hey Anne! It came from Mary’s shop…I love it, too. It ranks up there with the pine cubby that I bought from you! 🙂

Oh my goodness. To be so talented in the redo – just incredible! Your mom and dad are good friends. Would love to meet you when you are down this way.

Is Riley ever without the tennis ball! 🙂 Those shades look perfect for the space. I’ve removed over time all window coverings in our house and don’t know what else to put in their place. I just don’t like fabric window coverings. I have thought about reed shades, or shutters because our house is traditional architecture. So, look forward to seeing how the shades look!

Deb…NO! She always has one. If you decide to go the woven shade route, I really liked the saleslady/company that we used. Found her on Angie’s List. I’d be happy to send her info along…Have a good day.

Wow! I have to say I am actually jealous. Now that I live alone, I am questioning whether I need to live in a 1800 sq. ft. home with a walkout finished basement, and room after room that I never use. I reallly would like to live in a space such as your 1000 sq. ft. cottage. Could we see the rest of your space? Pretty please? I’m glad Riley found space for her ever-lovin’ tennis ball. She looks very happy. Enjoy.

    • Maple & Magnolia February 26, 2014 at 9:41 pm #

Hi Linda. If we did not have children still at home…this would be plenty of space for us! It’s very cozy! I’m still waiting for the mirror and light fixture for the bathroom…but that will be next. And the bedroom? You wouldn’t want to see it! I’ve got some work to do on it! 🙂

You have done a wonderful job here in the cottage. Those woven wood shades look very interesting…looking forward to hearing how you like them. Love that “cool” weathervane!

You have such talent for pulling it all together! My house is very “hodgepodgey”, but I’m beginning to think that’s my thing…my look 😉
