Once in a great, great while (usually on a Monday) I’ll go thrifting and hit pay dirt.
Mostly, though, I just find dirt.
Today was a pay dirt day.
I wasn’t even planning on thrifting but Hannah missed the bus. So after dropping her at school I thought well, I’m already out…I’ll pop in to Wally World for a few necessities.
Goodwill is in the same parking lot and Savers is across the street.
Had to.
Now since my sale, my thrift-o-losophy has changed. I no longer buy things because they are a good deal. “Good deals” have a way of piling up on you and getting you on an episode of Hoarders.
So when I’m thrifting and see something that catches my eye, I don’t purchase it unless I KNOW for sure where I’ll use it/put it.
Goodwill finds…
Two Meakin platters for five buckaroos. These will look great on the hutch when I switch back to blue and white in the summer. They had a whole bunch of the matching dinnerware but I didn’t need it. See? Restraint!
On to Savers…
milk glass creamer…to add to my collection of white creamers
milk glass sherbets…not usually a fan of milk glass but these will be great to hold jewelry or small things in my office.
brass bell…brings me back to my teaching days. Love, love, love this bell.
I’ve been incorporating gold/brass into our built ins for fall/winter so it fit right in.
I like big pillows and I cannot lie…
And a mystery item…
Okay, so I broke the rule on this…I have no idea what it is. I thought it was a cigar mold but I’m not sure. I have an antique dealer friend that will totally dig this (and probably will know what it is).
Last but not least…my favorite find of the day. This Pottery Barn bronze clock. I typed up the city names for the label holders, put in new batteries, set the time and voila…
Looks lover-ly in its new home. Twelve bucks.
So those are my hauls for the day.
Have you hit pay dirt lately?
Spill.

My Goodwill is closed for renovations. Boo
I am trying to be more careful about what I bring into my house too. In the James, Beth Moore study I’m doing; she says something like “hoarding is having to much stuff, that you do not use”.
You never really use accessories, but I don’t need an overflowing garage full of them, right!
That last photo in your post makes my heart go pitter patter. It is lovely!!
Great finds! Love the patina of the bell. I’m curious about the mold thingy too, maybe candles or like you said cigars.
Can I have that desk in the last picture?
It’s SO pretty. I’m more into purging right now than bringing in something new or old/new. I still have a way to go before I’m finished. I love me a good Goodwill deal though.
Love all your little pretties. You made a good haul today.
Went to Savers at lunch! Usually looking for fun vintage finds, but today I found a Pottery Barn Duvet new with tags! It was $9.99, but a nice suprise because today it was 1/2 price! So $5 for a brand new current catalog item!
Might have to share with my sister!
I love all your finds, Susan! I wouldn’t say I’ve hit pay dirt lately, but I did find some great things to makeover and sell at our local antique mart.
Awesome!! Our gw is not so good…but I might have to go now that you remind me it has been a long while!
I am so with you on the ‘must know where it’s going before I buy it’. I had to put this rule to use with my Kijiji habit. ps I shall now be singing sir mix alot all eve long lol
Oh, Kijiji…be still my heart. I scored many a wonderful find on there.
Susan, I think it is a coin tray. You came home with some pretty stuff today, I love the blue platters! I know what you are saying about “good deals”…sometimes it is hard to leave something behind at Goodwill and Salvation Army when we think it is such a good deal. If you ever tire of those milk glass pieces, can I have first dibs? I am a serious collector of milk glass!
I think you are right, Kim. The sections are the perfect size for quarters. You are on the list for the milk glass!
But the only way I’ll pass it on to you is if you get your self down here! Hurry up already!
I have found some really great things lately too! I found an old tobacco jar for a couple of bucks and found them selling online for over a hundred! I am trying to be more purposeful with my purchases as well, but even if it ends up being redonated, I figure I am helping a charity twice! Nice finds by you! I love those plates!
Lynne, totally agree.
Yep, you found the good stuff!
I bought a pan like that a while back and the lady told me she brought it with her from the New England states and it was an antique cornbread stick pan(similar to the ones shaped like corn)
Just had to share my find last weekend. A gorgeous french high dresser full of curves, all the hardware, just needin’ some lovin’….$10!!! Woo hoo! I’ve already started the makeover, but I don’t get to keep it. I’ve just started redoing furniture to make extra money and so far God has blessed my efforts.
That’s amazing! It’s a great (and fun) way to make extra money!
I found some really cool automobile gas caps of all things. They are funky and old, trying to figure out what to do with them.
That looks like a baking pan for breadsticks!
Oh, Melanie…I’d love to see them! Cool find!
I love your finds! While mine isn’t decor-related, I did score a leather jacket at the Salvation Army store for $15 a couple weeks ago.
Oh, that’s a great find. The older they get, they better they are!
“I like big pillows and I cannot lie” haha!! Too cute. Just found your blog through a Abi @ A Saturday morning.
Good find for me today
Looking forward to reading about your treasures and inspirations for my home.
Welcome, Stephanie! Thanks for stopping by!
You have piqued my interest with that tray! As a researcher by trade, I started looking. My guess is possibly a poker chip tray? Not very exciting…but maybe I’m wrong. You know you have to post what it is when your friend tells you, right?
Absolutely. I think some of the commenters are right about it being a coin tray. It’s the perfect size for quarters.
Today was my Thrifting Monday day, goodwill starts its
new special of the week on Mondays so I usually hit the store. I found some awesome treasures as well!
Aren’t Mondays the best?
Lucky you! I think that is a rolled coin tray that banks used to put the papered coin rolls in – and then stacked them in the vault back in the day (as in 20′s and 30′s.)
That is my official, untrained guess.
Shari…makes total sense. It’s the perfect size for quarters. Thank you, detective!
Boy did you ever hit the jack pot. My special favorites are those gorgeous platters for $5.I am so jealous, envious. I love older looking dishes like that. They just seem to fit in anywhere. I miss KY so much as I’d find so many great deals for affordable prices. We used to live outside Bowling Green.
The area we live in is really empty of so much for bargain hunting. Hardly any antique stores. I read about all the great stuff people get in Target, nope not our Target.
Can’t believe you got both platters for $5. What a steal. The prices at our Goodwill (Grand Junction,CO) are atrocious. Our local thrift store has gotten ridiculous also. Guess the stores have all found out about people wanting bargains to fix up and resell. Gotten downright greedy is what they’ve gotten. Happy for you to find such awesome goodies.
Happy Week.
JaneEllen, we lived in Louisville and I can see why you miss KY. What a gorgeous state. And perfect weather!I know what you mean about the prices…they are getting too big for their britches!
You definitely found the good stuff. I am not sure what your one find is, but it would make a great little catchall in a craft room.
Hugs,
Laura
Great finds! The brass bell is my favorite! I was thinking that tray was a feeder of some sort but then the coin tray made more sense.
I’ve been trying to purge lately so no great finds for me in a while.
Susan,
You got some great treasures. I am going to have to check out that new Savers by us.
Kris
Where is yours? I go to the ones in Lake Zurich and Crystal Lake.
The one we have by me is in Lake Zurich on Rand and there is a Goodwill right across the street by the Walmart. Are those the ones you went too. If so I hope you left me some treasures!!!!Ha Ha!!!!
Kris
Same one. Yes, I left plenty of goodies! I just love the new Savers. I always find something.
I’m going to go with a coin tray as well on the mystery item. Oh, and I just finished the James study from Beth Moore and totally “get” the less is more thing. But then, I’m a thrower.
I’m thinking that’s what it is…it’s the perfect size for quarters!
Great finds Susan! I found a French provincial dresser at savers for 3.00.On the way to my car they dropped it and refunded me the money so it was free!
xx
Anne
Wow, Anne. Can’t do better than free!
Wow, you did hit pay dirt. Congrats. Totally worth it. Thanks for sharing, liz
Darn…no Savers within 50 miles of me here in mid-Michigan! The Goodwill closest to me is NOT a good picking place, nor is the Salvation Army in my town.
Great scores!
Great finds – especially love the bell! I found an old bell recently too – I have it on my stove and my girls love to ring it and say “foods up”!

Lately I have been seeing Salvation Army as a giant fabric store. I stop in to check for wool blankets and wool sweaters. Blankets in great shape are displayed and used. Blankets with holes and the sweaters are being felted and used for sewing projects. But, like anything else, restraint is necessary. What is it about “if one is good, ten must be better” mentality? Working on that one. Good for you and streamlining your life! After all, it is all just stuff. Thanks for your blog. Enjoy it.
Can I have the details on the desk? Is it pine…I’m in love
I think it’s oak? Not usually a big fan, but this one spoke to me!
Have a great day.
